Gymnema Sylvestre means "sugar destroyer" and is
considered an herbal remedy for high blood sugar. For an example of how strong
this herb is:
Taken before sugar, the Gymnema molecules blocks the passages through which
sugar is normally absorbed, so that fewer sugar calories are assimilated.
The sugar and Gymnema are digested in the small intestine, but the larger
molecules of Gymnema can not be fully absorbed. Try this, for a
complete understanding of how this herb works. Taste a small bit of
something that is sweet. Then take a sip of Gymnema Sylvestre tea,
roll it about in your mouth for about 30 seconds. Then try that same
sweet taste. Astonishing! Can't taste the sugar! These
molecules fill receptor locations on the taste buds temporarily preventing
the taste buds being able to taste any sugar molecule in the food.
Traditionally it was recommended for stomach problems, constipation, water
retention and liver disease although modern research centers around it use
for type II diabetes. |
- Gymnema sylvester:
bitter, astringent, anti-inflammatory, liver tonic, diuretic, laxative,
uterine tonic.
The blood sugar lowing action of Gymnema leaves was first documented in the
late 1920's. The leaves are also noted for lowering serum cholesterol
and triglycerides.
The gymnemic acids found in this herb reduce the intestinal absorption of
glucose, slowing its release into the blood stream, thereby maintaining
healthy glucose and insulin levels. This herb can also stimulate the healthy
secretion of insulin and aid in the growth of pancreatic B cells (the cells
that secrete insulin).
