Muira puama is also said to be effective in treating disorders affecting the central nervous system. Research showed that an extract from the root of the plant can relieve physical and mental fatigue.[1] Muira Puama contains triterpene acid esters, sterols, and volatile oil. Muira Puama has been used for the prevention of sexual disorders and as an aphrodisiac.[2] Muira puama has long been valued as an aphrodisiac and a tonic for the nervous system. It is soothing and helpful for nervous exhaustion, stress , and trauma, and helps alleviate symptoms of depression .[3]

Of the 46 men who complained of loss of desire, 70% reported intensification of libido.[4] Muira puama's botanical name is Ptychopetalum olacoides . Don't be surprised to see muira puama spelled in many different ways, including mara puama, marapuama and marapama.[5] Muira Puama is a bush with small white flowers, although the useful parts are the roots and the bark. Research has discovered that these parts are high in fatty acids, essential oils, and an alkaloid called muira
