Allergies
An allergy is the inappropriate response by the
body's immune system to a substance that is not normally harmful.
The body mobilizes the white blood cells to fight these "foreign
bodies" The immune system produces IgE antibodies
to that allergen. Those antibodies then cause certain cells in the body to
release chemicals into the bloodstream, one of which is histamine
(pronounced: his-tuh-meen). In some cases the body's immune system wrongly identifies
a non toxic substance as an invader, and the white blood cells overreact and do
more damage to the body than the invader. An allergic response occurs, and
the results are hay fever, asthma, runny nose, itchy eyes, and irritated throat.
