Blue Cohosh has been used by the North American Indians for
cramps and menstrual problems. The plant used to be called papoose root
and squaw root, and commonly used. Blue Cohosh acts to stimulate the
uterine muscles which may help to easy birthing. The active compound in this
plant is caulosaponin, a powerful stimulator of uterine contractions.
It has also been shown useful in the regulation of menstrual cycles in women and
is helpful in relieving painful menstruation.
Blue Cohosh is an herbal medicine used for missing menstrual periods, painful
periods, historically for false or early labor (birth) pains, and to help
facilitate labor and contractions.
Blue Cohosh and Black Cohosh are often found growing near each
other, but Black Cohosh has more estrongic action. These herbs are to be
used with causing when pregnant. Always consult a doctor when using them.
