Caraway seeds are commonly added to impart a bit of spice. Do not, however, use so many seeds that they overpower the rye. Caraway Seeds are most popular in the foods of northern and eastern Europe. Caraway has also been used for the treatment of digestive problems like indigestion, colic, diarrhoea etc. Caraway seeds are traditionally used to flavour cakes, biscuits and fruit pies, which they do, pungently. They're also good in pickles and with cabbage and cauliflower.

Caraway seeds are just wonderful if you like them . Caraway seeds are also the favorite of Austrians, especially in preparing bread, cakes, pastries and cheeses. Caraway seeds are mainly used as a spice. However, seeds contain biologically active terpenoids, which are currently used for sprout inhibitor for potatoes.

Caraway seeds are the aromatic seed-like fruit of a plant that comes from the parsley family. With a nutty and delicate flavor, these seeds are used to flavor foods like cheese, breads, cakes, stews, meats and vegetables. Caraway seeds are used in breads, cakes, and pancakes, cinnamon and nutmeg and mace enhance rich festive fruitcakes together with nuts, dried fruits, and currants. Butter and bacon fat also add flavor to vegetables and fish. Caraway seeds are found in excavations of the Neolithic Age settlements. People used caraway as spice for bread for Roman solders.

Caraway seeds are reputed aphrodisiacs and the basis of the German liqueur kummel. Coriander is mentioned as an aphrodisiac in the Arabic One Thousand and One Nights , and is said to conjure up the devil when used in combination with fennel in the same text.

Caraway seeds are used for flavoring in confectionery. A fragrant oil that is obtained from the seeds is said to have carminative and stimulant properties and is used for flavoring. Caraway seeds are eaten raw or sugarcoated as comfits after a meal to prevent gas and to sweeten the breath. Caraway aids digestion, is good for babies with colic, and helps nursing mothers to promote milk secretion. Caraway seeds are considered somewhat exotic in American cuisine. The amount of one tea spoon is on the low side.

Caraway seeds are one of the main ingredients in chai, the unique spicy black tea that originated in India and now is easily found all around the world. If you cannot get a hold of herbal tea, try making a cup of regular tea with cinnamon, ground ginger and four caraway seed pods.

Caraway seeds are curved, and tapered at each end with five pale ridges. The colour of the valley between each ridge should be dark brown.
