Cholesterol
Cholesterol, a waxy, fat-like substance, is naturally present
in cell walls or membranes everywhere in the body. Your body uses cholesterol to
produce many hormones, vitamin D, and the bile acids that help to digest fat.
Cholesterol is an essential chemical for brain and muscle function.
LDL-cholesterol is often called the "bad" cholesterol. For this type
of test, your doctor will ask you to fast for 9 to 12 hours before the test. LDL
is also referred to as "bad" cholesterol because it is the form of
this fat that is linked to heart disease. HDL is referred to as " good
cholesterol " because it helps remove LDL cholesterol from the blood. LDL
is most often referred to as the "bad" cholesterol whereas HDL is
knows the "good" cholesterol. If you have too
much cholesterol in your bloodstream, the excess may be deposited in the
arteries of the heart, which could lead to heart disease.
