Herbal therapy for a hot phlegm cough using Traditional Chinese
Medicine.
The ancient prescription "Qing Qi Hua Tan
Wan", originally appeared in Investigations of Medical Formulas (Yi
Fang Kao). In modern clinic, it helps pneumonia, acute bronchitis, outbreak of
chronic bronchitis with phlegm-heat congestion. This set of symptoms is where the accumulated phlegm becomes
thick and sticky due to heat. The cough can be loud, rattling, barking sound.
The phlegm is complicated to expel and the heat gives it a darker color.
The color may range from yellow to brown or dark green. This type of cough calls for
action as the green indicates that the trapped mucus has become infected. Mucus
in the lungs is a prefect breeding ground for bacteria. Clearing the
mucus quickly with herbal formulas and teas which will moisten the lungs to
dislodge the mucus and stimulate expectoration.
Qin Qi Hua Tan Wan, Pinellia Root Tea Pills was first
described in Jing Yue Chuan Shu (1624AD). Useful in the treatment of bronchitis,
sinus congestion, and chronic asthma with expectorated phlegm or nasal discharge.
The Pinellia root functions and usage:
-
1. Dries dampness, transforms cold-phlegm, descends
rebellious qi - cough with copious sputum especially due to dampness of
spleen.
2. Harmonizes stomach, stops vomiting due to lingering phlegm-dampness in
the stomach.
3. Dissipates nodules, reduces distension - phlegm in chest or neck or
anywhere in the body, focal distention in the chest.
Contraindicated for Yin
deficient chronic cough, cough without phlegm or cough with thin watery sputum.
Use with caution during pregnancy. Contains tree nuts.
