As the Cuucuma rhizome matures, it gets a thicker skin, and the color deepens to a burnished gold or amber, as the flavor gets more piquant and peppery; older rhizome is best for curries while younger is better for soups.
Turmeric has long been used as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive disorders, osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis, cancer and liver problems and for the treatment of skin diseases and wound healing. It is believed to strengthen the overall energy of the body, relieve gas, dispel worms, regulate menstruation, dissolve gallstones, and relieve arthritis.[5] The root, or rhizome, has a tough brown skin and bright orange flesh. Ground Tumeric comes from fingers which extend from the root.[6]
The herb enhances skin colour, heals ulcers and purifies the blood. It is therefore used in treatment of blood disorders, skin rashes and itching.[7] Allergic reactions to turmeric may occur, including contact dermatitis (an itchy rash) after skin or scalp exposure. People with allergies to plants in the Curcuma family are more likely to have an allergic reaction to turmeric.[8] Curcumin can effectively blocks a number of these lines, It has the ability to prevent skin cancer,
and is effective against colon cancer, it also enhances immunity and stops angiogenesis (ability to enable tumors to create an own blood supply). [9]
Its paste is used in cleansing and disinfecting the skin and skin ulcer without drying out its natural oil. [10] Especially good for the skin and for enhancing resistance to skin allergies. It also helps support healthy liver function, which aids assimilation and energy levels.[11] It is said that use of Curcuma longa for numerous medicinal problems ranging from constipation to skin disease goes back to 600 BC as mentioned in literature. Current traditional Indian medicine claims the use of its powder in the treatment of biliary disorders, anorexia, cough, diabetic wounds, hepatic disorder, rheumatism, anti-inflammatory, and sinusitis.[12]
Topical application would help in neutralizing damaging free radicals on the surface of the skin, thereby retarding aging and damage due to ultraviolet radiation. [19]
