Senna is also the primary ingredient found in most "dieter 's teas". The combination of acting as a stimulant which reduces a dieter's appetite, and the laxative properties that cause food to move through their system before as many calories can be absorbed is a combination that can lead to rapid and even dangerous weight loss.[1] Senna is contraindicated in an inflammatory condition of the alimentary canal, or even irritation of those parts, general debility,
and hemorrhoids.
Senna is also considered an important herb in traditional Chinese medicine, Indian Ayurvedic, and unani medicine. The two species used most often for medicinal purposes are Alexandrian senna and Tinnevelly senna.[10] Senna is grown from seed and requires plenty of sun. [11] Senna is contraindicated in an inflammatory condition of the alimentary canal, hemorrhoids, prolapsus, ani, etc. The well-known 'black draught' is a combination of Senna and Gentian, with any aromatic, as cardamom or coriander seeds, or the rind of the Seville orange.[12]
Senna is an herb that has been utilized for centuries because of its laxative effect; it is currently the active ingredient in many bulk laxative and fiber supplements. It can also be found in certain tea infusions.[19] Senna is the main ingredient in many modern day American laxatives. But in Haiti, where worms are a more prevalent problem among the population, senna is gathered and used for its febrifuge properties.[20]
