Lemon balm is sometimes used to flavor sweet drinks and may be added to any food, dessert or drink containing lemon juice to get a more intensive lemon aroma. [10] Lemon Balm is used to ease menstrual tensions, pains and acts as an antidepressant. [11]

Lemon balm is useful for treating nervous disturbances of sleep and chronic gastrointestinal disorders, but its primary use today is in treating viral infections of the skin, especially herpes, both genital herpes and cold sores. Although it does not eliminate flare-ups, it relieves itching in hours and helps the lesions heal over in a few days.
Lemon Balm is also one of the ingredients in Benedictine, as well as many other liqueurs and digestives. Fresh, the leaves make for a lightly astringent facial steam.[16] Lemon Balm is also a strewing herb. [17] Lemon Balm is native to the east Mediterranean region and west Asia, and is now cultivated throughout Europe. The leaf and the leaf oil can be used medicinally.[18]
Lemon balm is a hardy perennial plant that was traditionally used and preferred by the bee keepers in ancient eras. The ancient bee keepers used the crushed leaves of the plant as a rub on beehives so as to encourage the domesticated bees to return to their hives and the belief was that these bees would bring other bees along with them when they returned.[12]
Lemon balm is a vigorous bushy perennial growing from 12-32 in (45cm) in height. Lemon balm seeds take a long time to germinate.[14] Lemon balm is sometimes mistaken for Lemon Catnip (Nepeta citridora) which is an emmenagogue. [15]
