Magnolia bark is generally used as an anti-stress and anti-anxiety agent. Medical research indicates that magnolia's anti-stress benefits are linked to it's ability to control levels of the body's primary stress hormone, cortisol.[1] Magnolia bark is an herb. It's used in Chinese medicine to treat "upset" stomach.[2] Magnolia bark is also incorporated into larger herbal
formulas such as Relora Extracts of magnolia bark are available in capsule and tincture form.[3]
Magnolia bark is a folk remedy used for numerous ailments. Beta sitosterol is thought to lower cholesterol levels, but does not cause weight loss.[4] Magnolia bark is classified in the modern Chinese Materia Medicas along with a relatively small group of herbs that are said to resolve dampness through aromatic penetration (7). The fragrance is said to awaken the spleen to distribute dampness, and the fragrance can also penetrate through damp accumulations to assist in breaking them up and allowing the fluids to flow freely.[5] Magnolia bark is a traditional Chinese medicine used to treat menstrual cramps, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating and gas, anxiety, asthma, coughs, colds, diarrhoea, indigestion, intestinal problems, nausea. It has also been indicated for Alzheimer's disease and is currently getting much press as a "cortisol", a stress hormone-lowering supplement.[6]
