Nutmeg is native to the Banda islands of Indonesia and, as is the history with many spices, the trade in nutmeg was dominated by Portugal in the 15th century. Then, in the 17th century the Dutch became the predominant traders of this precious spice.[5] Nutmeg is a must for barbecue sauce. In Europe, nutmeg is used atop most baked goods, hot beverages, and in cream sauces for noodles.[6]
Nutmeg is antifungal and antibacterial. For example, the 0157 E coli strain is sensitive to nutmeg while the non-pathogenic strains of E.[7]
Orally, nutmeg and mace are used for diarrhea, nausea, gastric
spasms, flatulence, and gastric mucosal inflammation. Nutmeg is best in small quantities. It is used as a flavouring and combats minor gastric problems.
Though it may causes unpleasant effects in large quantities.[4]
Nutmeg seeds are also used for cancer, kidney disease, insomnia,
increasing menstrual flow, inducing abortion, as a hallucinogen, and
a general tonic.
Topically, nutmeg and mace are used as an analgesic, especially for
rheumatism, mouth sores, and toothache.
High
doses of nutmeg can cause anticholinergic side effects, but the
constituents 1,8-cineole and alpha-terpinene are reported to have
anticholinesterase activity. Nutmeg and mace and their oils
have a variety of other effects including antispasmodic,
antioxidant, hypotensive, emetic , antibacterial, antifungal and
larvicidal effects.
