Research shows that turmeric root supports the normal metabolic
inflammatory response by helping the body to inhibit the production of Cox-II
enzyme.[14]
Seven phytoestrogens found in common herbal products were
screened for estrogen receptor binding and growth inhibition of
androgen-insensitive (PC-3) and androgen-sensitive (LNCaP) human prostate tumor
cells. In a competitive 3H-estradiol ligand binding assay using mouse uterine
cytosol, 2.5 M quercetin, baicalein, genistein, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG),
and curcumin displaced 85% of estradiol binding, whereas apigenin and
resveratrol displaced 40%.[16]
This turmeric and curcumin product combines a concentrated turmeric extract,
standardized to 95% curcuminoids, with whole turmeric rhizome. Combining these
active constituents with the whole herb ensures that all the important compounds
of the botanical are present.[17] Turmeric is also used in bakery products,
sauces, curry powders, snack foods, cereals, etc. Turmeric is also used as a
marinating ingredient.[18] Turmeric is known to increase bile production and
boost the production of enzymes that digest sugar and fat and, thereby, may
inhibit cholesterol from crystallizing into gallstones. [19
A wonderful spice when used with fish, in baked goods, meat
and meat products, prepared mustards and pickles, broths, cheeses, dressings,
grains, egg recipes, and soups. Try it with artichokes and potatoes and in rice
dishes.
