White Willow (Salix species) (bark): The bark of the stately white willow tree (Salix alba) has been used in China for centuries as a medicine because of its ability to relieve pain and to lower fevers. Early settlers in America found Native Americans gathering bark from indigenous willow trees for similar purposes.[1] White Willow Bark Extract should be used at about 5% of the total formulation. Because this extract is powdered, it must be reconstituted with water.[2] White Willow Bark Extract should not be used for the prevention of heart disease, migraines, or strokes because it presently has not been proven to inhibit platelet-activating factors. Research also shows that low levels of salicylates in the blood actually increase uric acid concentrations, whereas high levels of salicylates in the blood lower the uric acid level.[3]
White willow bark, which contains a natural occuring chemical from which aspirin is derived. This chemical,
salicin, makes white willow bark the natural substitute for aspirin, with all of the same benefits of the
pharmaceutical drug, but without the harmful side effects.[10]
